THE 1294 MADOG AP LLYWELYN POPULAR REVOLT AGAINST CONQUEST AND COLONIALISM - A National Anti - Colonial Rebellion.

Note I shall Illustrate the below with photos I recently took in Caernarfon (see Revolt section below) and at Morlais Castle, the latter  in Llais Glywysing blog at end.

A Prologue to a Socialist History of Wales for the Wales/Welsh Left to study, discuss and debate whilst on buses to London or maybe at long last on way into your own back yard to fight a new order of Robber Barons of  Neo Colonial Capitalist Corperate Greed in a 21st Century Welsh Popular Patriotic Left Revolt towards a 'Welsh Socialist Rebellion', non violent of course:

I think it will do the Welsh Anglo Cambro Left and I include Plaid Left here a lot of good, they might be persuaded to consider the 1294 Revolt in same way as they might consider the 14th Century European Popular Revolts. Not  least of course the 1381 Peasants Revolt though no doubt ignorent of the Welsh Popular rebellions of Llywelyn Bren 1316 and  the St Valentines Massacre of the 1345 Revolt:

The initial revolt began on Anglesey but took up proper when the 'Rebels' made a sneak attack via an unfinnished Wall of Caernarfon Castle, see Palace Street today and other photos below:

The Madog Revolt occurred a decade following  on the conquest of 1282  - 3 and the 1284 Statute of Rhuddlan:

  3. First thing to understand and appreciate is that the Statute of Rhuddlan was a  'Cheap Colonial Trick', of which English Imperialism was to become very good at not least of course in the creation of 'Client Tribes' and the producing of Quislings and breeding of traitors major and minor also of course generation after generation of lickspittals and others forms of low life collaborators (No, I do not mince words nor have by palms greased by Saxon Silver nor ever seek to be an establishment Jobsworth). So here's how it was which of course requires 'Welsh Traitors' to become 'Colonial Collaborators' for it to work.
  4. Unfortunatly, after  some 200 years plus of a Welsh Aristocracy seeking Welsh Unity and Independance from Anglo - Norman Conquest, in the 13th Century this was  being reduced to Gwynedd as the 'Bastion of Welsh Independance'. Yes! lets be Socialists and have a go at these Welsh Princes and their practise of Eye Gouging and Castrations, not least the keeping Bondmen/Women (Serfs/Tennants). Whatever, Llywelyn III put up a pretty decent fight of it, to up hold a failing 'Gwledydd' (state). Economically, being pushed into an economic decline with no 'Welsh Boroughs' as the Scots had. A none to fertile land and their Seas and fishing Industry being crowded out  by English, Icelandic, Irish, Scots  and Galician Fishing Fleets.
  5. The writting was on the wall and the first to relise this were the top dogs of the 'Native Aristocratic Religious Leadership', the Civil Service of the times, on the 'Latin Internet' as those of Bangor Cathedral. They later along with the 'Old Chiefs' would sell Llywelyn III and the 'Welsh Cause' down the river. Why? It's not too difficult to understand why the 'Machivellian' Aristo - Religous Administrators did but as to why the 'Old Chiefs' did was for a number of reasons.
  6. The State of Gwynedd existance for some time was due to the economic reformism of  Owain Gwynedd and the Military Reforms of Llywelyn Fawr. Owain Gwynedd opposed Gavelkind and worked  to undo much of it, this did  not go down well with an 'Older Tribal Leadership'.

      Required greater use of the 'Macywfiaid', they being 'Young Lords' usually sent to Courts at Age 14 to seriously begin learning the Art of War, for at Age 14 they were eligible to fight in wars. Prior to this as from age 7 youths would be sent to live with their uncles to learn discipline and to begin their 'Military Training'. Teenagers at War  is no new thing, the Irish had employed such in their Fianna and possibly the dark age Cymru too, in 'Y Gwynwyr' though this also has a religous meaning. Perhaps they were young 'Warrior Monks', our history is none too clear about this? Wharever, during the War of 1282 Llywelyn III had began to call up youths of under 14 and  this was leading to discontent amongst many Chieftains who could see that their family lines being whiped out.

      3. Nevertheless, as long as military matters were going well for Llywely III and they were with a November Victory at Battle of Moel y Don and stubborn Resistance along the  Conwy Valley causing major English Casulaties. So general treachery was not yet on the cards but it was otherwise with the 'Welsh Machivellians' of Bangor and their 'Treachery in the Belfry of Bangor Cathedral' that led to the assisination of Llywelyn III at Aberedw on 11 December 1282. Dafydd III was to lead the struggle into 1283 but by then with the fall of Castell y Bere the 'Old Chiefs' began to plot with Edward I to betray Dafydd as well, which was done by native Welsh who caught and  handed him over to the English.

          The  Conquest of Wales completed.

          Edward began to create the 'English National Debt' (borrowing from Italian Bankers) by building Castles all around Gwynedd but offset this cost by establishing a  Colonial 'Ecopnomic' Order with Borough Towns and Ethnic Cleansing good farm lands particularly in 'Y Berfeddwlad' of Denbighshire and on Anglesey. Now here's where the 'Cheap Colonial Trick' comes in, after a meeting with the 'Old Chiefs' he tells them they can have  the return of certain old laws, this includes 'Gavelkind'. This allows the dumb 'Welsh Traditionals' to devide their land up to their sons untill in time it becomes uneconomic 'parcelets' of land. The Sons sell such to the Borough Colonial settlers who are of  course increasing their measure  of Welsh land. meanwhile the 'Sons' spent the money from the sale of their land possibly pissing it up and whoring untill broke they have no choice  that to become  'Adar y Greim', theives and  bandits and mercenaries in foreign wars.

          However, the now increasing landless small time 'aristocrats' are getting somewhat discontented, the 'Vichy Style State' Edward had  promised their class was not exactly taking shape as they though it would. They had  been tricked, laws were in existence to keep them out of the new English Colonial Towns, on top of which there existed measures that worked against them  economically. As example, they could not make and trade bread into the 'English Towns' only sell  grain to English Millers and on top of it all there existed an Apartheid system of Welshry and Englishry and laws that forbid intermarraige and the carrying of Arms.

          So sure things were not looking good for 'Taffy' but then Edward decide he needed 'Taffy' for his wars in Scotland but 'Taffy' was none too keen about that. But the  final straw was the finnancial one, this was going to bite an already economically hard  pressed down wardly mobile popualtion plus hinder the up wards advance of others who had eyes on main chances there might have been as  collaborators. On 26th October 1291 the English Parliament granted Edward I the right to tax the  Welsh, a 15th on 'moveable property' (see English Peasants Revolt), for a population that would not own very much and certainly had little  of a money economy nor a  tradition of taxes this  was  possibly the last straw. However, the Welsh must have just bided their time and mean patient realising that if they were to rebel it had  to be a 'National Revolt'. This would take some organisation, after all there is no 'Internet' or 'Facebook' and that land is full of 'Colonial Collaborators' and potential ever ready spies and informers. Sure nothing changes?

          Nevertheless on 9th September 1294 Madog's Rebellion begins, breaking out in Gwynedd it spreads across the land as Wild Fire, not just a National Rebellion but a Popular Revolt in what becomes our first National Anti Colonial Armed Struggle before that of Owain Glyndwr and the great war of Independance 1400 - 1421. The  causes being:

          * Conquest and National Status Decline for the  lower 'aristocracy'.

          * Cultural and Economic 'Apartheid' leading to Social disadvantage and decline.

          * Conscripton to fight in the Scottish Wars unpopular.

          * Taxation with or without representation,  no matter!

          * Cultural/Racial Antagonism.

          * Colonial Bullying.

          You name it, the Welsh had  become really 'pissed off' as  one can be seen with the way they hung the constable of Caernarfon Castle in it's very gateway. No problem at all, theRebellion spread through out North Wales and in the South as well were Morlais Castle was capture by Southern Rebel Morgan ap Maredudd of Gwynllwg. See:
