Photo Below is of Mam's Dad, my grandfather Frederick Hughes RIP.


Wounded Twice in WWI on the Western Front, above Photo was taken in an Hospital, he was killed in a Colliery incident in 1951. Mam told me he never liked to talk about the war other than to say how much he hated the Generals, while in hospital he was tought by Nuns - Nurses how to sew something he did all his life as well as repair shoes also learnt whilst in hospital. Below photo of he and myself close by Pond Side, Merthyr where he lived and, I for first five years of my life. It was shortly after this photo was taken he was killed. My Dad tells me Fred was an hard man and did Mountain Fighting when younger. Mam remembers him in particular as having taught her the alphabet, playing cards with he before he went to work. When she was 18 and allowed to stay out latish, she had to be back by 9:00 pm or he would be off up town looking for her, how times change. All three of my grandparents died when I was young, only one Nan lived in to older age, makes me quite sad I missed out on three but I do have memories of Mams Mam and her Dad taking me for walks around Merthyr and trips to Porthcawl,


I have stood near enough in the same place above with my children, great when you can do that, I guess on this day Frederick Hughes will come to mind, who knows he possibly contributed to my Rebel Nature. Whilst on subject of family must mention that my old 'Sixties' compatriot Philip ap Siarl's Mam died recently, I went to the funeral in Bristol the other week but could not attend the scattering of her ashes at Oxwich Bay today. She was as my and many other 'Sixties' Mams, true 'Rebel Mams' who stood by their sons. I am mindful to mention that during WW II she drove an Ambulance in the Bristol Blitz', would later following the War with her husband Sam settle in Seven Sisters were Philip was born and Bred and where I would often stay 'Back in the Day'. Thus in memory of :


JOYCE JEFFERIES RIP

b: 13 August 1922 - d: 2 June 2011.

Fondest Memories - Lovely Women and good Mam to Philip, will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

    The Rev Joseph James mentioned above was a local 
    Head Master who in the late 1940's led a community 
    campaign of resistence to the British Military retaining
    the Preselli Mountains has a permanant Training Ground 
    as they were to do on Epynt and elsewhere in Wales. The
    campaign was successful and since a memorial has been
    placed locally bearing a line by the Poet Waldo Williams;
    'He kept the Preslau from the Beast'. A Victory for us to 
    commemorate for a change, I shall have to go down and
    suss location and take a photo of the memorial. I would 
    have known nothing about this unless I had picked up a
    local Visitors leaflet recently at the excellent 'Cafe Becca'
    at Efail Wen.

    An Annual Rally and Outing to a great area of Wales,
    I went down for midsummer Moning but the bad weather
    drove us of the Mountain, so went to Efail Wen instaed and
    on to Newchurch and Carmarthen:
